Welcome to our year round Mini-Tennis programme. Please find below our timetable for the 2008/2009   season. - new times added!

We are an LTA “mini –Tennis “ accredited club, which means we run the type of programme recommended by the LTA for 4 - 10 yr old children to introduce them into the game of tennis in a safe, fun, learning environment.

The 4 - 10 yrs old section is aimed towards mini-tennis and  transition tennis, which is designed to encourage children to learn the game properly without being overcome by the size of a full tennis court.

There are 3 levels of mini-tennis - Red, Orange, and Green. In addition there is a Tiny Tots section as a starter level for keen young ones!

You will notice that the centre is running two types of sessions now, a technical session during the week and a more general games based environment at the weekend. There is no limit as to how many sessions you can do, but we would like the children to attend the weekend session and at least 1 technical session each week. This means that the coaching staff will have more opportunity to develop your child and to give them the positive help they need to make them better sports people and tennis players.

TECHNICAL SESSIONS

During these mid week sessions the coaches will work on a young player’s correct gripping of the racket, the swing shapes and proper footwork for each of the four basic strokes in tennis. Our aim is to have the players looking like and hitting like tennis players on the TV. In fact, to make sure that the young player’s are learning correctly we will compare all our Mini - Tennis players to the “Pros’” by using a video    analysis programme that the club has introduced. All our players will get a cd of them against a famous player so they can see their own improvement over time….. Watch out for the invite to a video day that will be coming up soon….

ABC’S and COMPETITION

Firstly, what are the abc’s of tennis? Well it’s the things that make all sports people good. The abc’s stand for AGILITY, BALANCE , CO-ORDINATION and SPEED, or in simple terms...running, hopping,   jumping, skipping, turning, throwing, catching… all of these skills are necessary to make a sports person and definitely needed to make a great tennis player. These can be practised in large groups where it can be a lot of fun and challenging to all involved.

The competition at the red stage is more about team games, learning to score, what the lines on a court mean and how to play the game i.e. rally!

We know kids love to compete, so with Orange and Green, the competition is a bit more formal. We will do mini matches and teach some simple tactics, like hitting into space. There is still a lot of emphasis on team events, so that everyone has a chance to be a winner. The coaches will also talk about good      sportsmanship and how to play fairly on the court. We want to let children compete but in an environment that is positive and fun and where they can develop their skills safely overtime without being put off the game of tennis. After all it takes 10,000 hours of practice & competition to make a professional tennis player!!!!!

These players come at least twice a week and on the weekend session. They are expected to attend any LTA days and enter a minimum number of fun competitions. We are always looking for children with ability that we can include into the programe...
